Focus Themes: choose the room you read in

When I read, my phone sits on the table with the session running. Which means that for twenty or thirty minutes, the focus screen is the only thing the phone shows. It's probably the screen I've stared at more than any other in Book Reading Habit.

For a long time it was just a timer on paper. Functional, calm, and always the same. And I kept thinking: if this screen is going to sit next to my book every day, it should feel less like a stopwatch and more like a place.

Small confession first: Focus Themes have been in the app for a little while - they shipped quietly in 5.2. But I never properly showed them, and they've become my favorite part of a session. So here they are.

The rule for every theme was the same: the timer stays the hero, the theme is the room it sits in. Nothing animates in a way that asks for your attention. You're there to read, not to watch the screen.

Six free looks

Every one of these is free, for everyone:

• Paper. The classic look - an ambient wash of your book's cover on paper. Still the default.
• Mono. Typewriter focus: monospaced type on plain paper. My pick when I want zero decoration.
• Sepia. Warm amber on cream, like an old page.
• Dawn. A blush-to-lavender morning sky. First light, fresh start.
• Ocean. Deep, calm blue-teal water.
• Novel. Set like a printed page, serif type and all.

You'll find them in Settings → Focus Themes. Tap one and the preview shows the live session screen, clock running, before you commit.

Six living scenes

The premium set goes further: each one is a slow, living scene with a glowing progress ring in the Siri style. "Living" here means quiet - an aurora that breathes, rain that comes and goes. Movement you notice when you glance up, never movement that pulls you out of the book.

• Aurora. Northern lights, breathing green and violet.
• Solar. The sun up close - molten ground, flares erupting in slow motion.
• Nebula. Deep space: an indigo nebula and starlight.
• Forest. A living forest - birds cross the sky, rain passes, water glints below.
• Candlelight. Reading by a live flame, warm halo, breathing shadows.
• Rainy Window. A rainy night: city bokeh through wet glass, drops running down.

These six are part of the premium tier. The free themes stay free, always.

And none of this is iPhone-only: the themes are available on iPad and Mac too.

Pick a room

A theme won't read the book for you. But the screen you stare at every day shapes how the ritual feels, and making it feel like yours is one more way of making showing up easier than not showing up. Put the phone on the table, start the timer, read.
